Hi Tegan! I read The Cure for Drowning and I enjoyed it a lot! Or rather, I listened to the audio book. I already recommended it to so many people. This year I decided to only read books that I already had at home before purchasing anything new, so I didn't plan to read the ones from the Canada Reads selection, but I realized I had 1 credit left in my Audible account... lucky me! Especially because one of my favourite subjects is the 2nd World War. My favourite book is The Book Thief, have you read it? It's also during the war. Good luck on the debate!!

I couldn’t find ‘the cure for drowning’ in audible, any advice about finding it? Maybe it’s not available in Aus yet?

I found a hack on Reddit where they explain how to get books from other countries. You have to do it from a browser, not the Audible app though: https://www.reddit.com/r/audible/comments/dmh1il/updated_tutorialbypass_audible_region_lock/

I hope this helps!

Thanks! I’ll look into it!

It looks like it's not available in Aus yet, see if you can switch to the Canadian Audible store. This is the link for the book on Audible.ca -- https://www.audible.ca/pd/B0CD2PYY3V?source_code=ASSORAP0511160006&share_location=pdp

Oh! The book I'm currently reading is called The Girl They Left Behind by Roxanne Veletzos, which is ALSO during the war lol, but in Romania.

Best of luck, Tegan! I actually read Essex County because of Sara and really enjoyed it :)

Currently revisiting Springsteen’s Born to Run memoir. Just hoping to score some tour tickets…

Hi Tegan! I’m looking forward to Canada Reads and seeing you defend your choice. I plan to read all five books, I think it’s doable. I’m finishing a reread of The Secret Garden, and The Wide Wide Sea (which Sara recommended on the November zoom call). I’m enjoying both! In December, I read a wonderfully moving book called Tell the Wolves I’m Home. Have you heard of it?

I was able to source all the Canada Reads picks locally except for The Cure for Drowning, so I ordered from a Canadian bookstore and happily paid the shipping. It has now arrived and I can’t wait to dive in. LOL

Hey Tegan,

Thanks for posting! Please read your posts when you can.

I was very pleased to see that Deby has read The Cure for Drowning via audible, because I was very disappointed when you first announced it and I couldn’t find it on audible. I still can’t find it, but I’m hoping it’s just not available here in Aus yet.

What platform is Canada reads on? I’ll watch it if I can (depending on where it’s available). But I definitely plan to read the book.

My favourite book so far in general is called ‘I wish you all the best’ by Mason Deaver, they’re a Nonbinary author with a Nonbinary main character! It’s a really great romance/coming of age story, but I will warn potential readers, there’s quite a bit of transphobia in the book too (often comes with the territory, because unfortunately it’s part of the trans experience).

To me, Tegan, the fact that you are championing Loghan Paylor’s book and going out on a limb for their book shows that you care about it! Which is good enough for me to want to read it! I don’5 think you should see it as ‘letting the person down’ the exposure is still great, and you chose their book out of 20 or so options, right? As an aspiring author, if it was my book, I’d be beyond pleased just to be one of the five. I hope that helps? What do I know really? It’s not like you asked, but that’s my 2 cents!

Thanks for sharing Tegan! Good to have you back! (Lol, almost write ‘good to have you book’).

Canada Reads seems like a really cool concept! I want to read The Cure for Drowning but I don't think it's been published in the UK so I'm struggling to find a copy. I've just finished rereading Last Night At The Telegraph Club which is a queer YA historical fiction, Cynthia Erivo's audiobook Simply More and I'm almost finished Heated Rivalry! Good luck with the competition and hope you win!

Tegaaaaaan! Salut! This sounds like an amazing program. I am very curious about Canada Reads and will follow along. Regardless how it turns out, promoting reading is one of the most rewarding activities we can do.

I have seven books in the works. Maybe one day, a book of mine will be on there. 😊

Love hearing from you and you look fabulous. Your hair *chef’s kiss*

Hey Tegan! I recently picked up The Cure for Drowning, and will be cheering you on in April! Planning to check out the others. Reading more often has been such a wonderful addition to my life since leaving socials, and encouraging others to read more is great. I just finished Light Years by James Salter, so beautifully written. Oh how I love public libraries.

Have so much fun! Just put the book on hold at my local library.

This is so exciting! I too love to read, I even bring a book to work to read on my break. My coworker is an avid reader as well so we exchange books and write notes about them and then compare the notes. Do you remember Oprah’s book club? I read so many amazing books from that club, I’m going to pick up the five books from Canada Reads and read them as well. Right now I’m reading The Neuroscientist Who Lost Her Mind by Barbara K. Lipska. It’s a true story about a woman who descends into madness and her remarkable recovery.

I hope Canada Reads won’t be too stressful for you! Oh the things we will do for a good book, am I right?

LOL who's gonna choose a favorite book? That is absolutely impossible! But I, too, as a major book collector, am glad you're doing it and hope we find a way to watch it here in the US.

Meanwhile I'm about to finish the excellent The Road to Tender Hearts, which I bought on a visit to Alaska (!) at an incredible bookstore called The Writer's Block, which was also a performance space and which I think shut down two weeks after I was there. Booo!

Glad I got a little piece of the place before it closed.

Go be competitive!

Hi Tegan! I remember you talking about it before, and Canada Reads is such a lovely idea. I haven’t read any of the books so I can’t wait to read them all. And then follow along with the debates in the competition.

You’re going to be wonderful, you’re so passionate about reading, don’t doubt yourself, and try and enjoy it as much as you can! 🫶🏼

I honestly really struggle to pick out my favourite book as there are just so many.

But I do have one book that I know I loved and would recommend to lots of people.

It’s called Strong Female Character by Fern Brady. It’s a very emotional and powerful autobiography by the comedian Fern Brady. She speaks a lot about how she wasn’t diagnosed as autistic until she was in her 30s. And the challenges of growing up in Scotland in the 90s, being undiagnosed.

It made me laugh and cry. Would recommend! 🥲😊

Good luck with the competition!

Good job stepping up to the challenge and taking on this new role. Have fun with it, I bet you won't regret saying yes. Go get 'em!

Wow I can't believe it's been so long since Sara was in Canada Reads, it feels like yesterday! Can't wait to watch 🤩

JD's avatar

I got anxious just reading this, but sounds like it'll be fun for the viewer! I'll have to go back and watch Sara's episode. Hope you have fun with the process!

Hi Tegan! I love how much you love reading. It inspires me to try to pick up another book and get reading again. I’m a big fan of Louise Penny. Have you read any of the three pines novels? Good luck in April!
