Sometimes I think you’re too hard on yourself. We love lo-fi; that’s why we became fans in the first place. Don’t give up we truly love your music, and I believe any song you release is a success. You’re right the industry has changed a lot, and things don’t seem as organic lately. But one thing I’ve always admired about you and Sara is that you’ve kept making music in a way that stays true to yourselves, and not all artists can afford that.

P.S.: Come back to TikTok, not just to sell music but also to make funny videos and pet trends :)

I love you both.

One of the things I love about you guys is that you don't fit in a box. Some of your older material is more on the 'weird' side I guess (maybe not compared to some of the really weird shit I've listened to over the years 😅) but that's exactly why I love it so much. I've always liked music that is different, music that has an edge, has its own sound, that isn't comparable to anyone else's sound. And you guys have that 🔥 You were always different and you still ARE different ❤️ I would love to see you release more songs/EPs in between but I can imagine it's hard to find any time when you have multiple projects on the go. Make sure you don't work yourself too hard ❤️

YES! And this is what I was trying to get at during the Richmond VIP questions. I have loved hearing your demos over the years. I love that you’d release so many of them. With their own artwork. Some I really had to dig for back in the day! It inspired me so much. Hearing how they evolved. Im happy you’re having this experience looking and listening back!

I still love making silly low-fi demos in GarageBand. And I’m waiting for an email address so I can send songs to YOU! :)

Here's a thought... Patreon subscription where you release whatever you want for everyone subscribed to you? I guess that's kind of what this Substack is for. All that being said, I absolutely adore all those random tracks. the ones not on a full album. I know some of them sound kiiinda rough, but I absolutely adore that. Some of my faves.

I hate that you guys feel a bit stressed about releasing... but just know your fans are LIVING for the next release! T&S always knocks it out of the park, in my books!

This is on my top 5 Tegan and Sara songs (feel free to play live at any time :P). And Lo-fi? Do it!. I’m going to use The Courtney’s and Jen’s solo project, Big Rig, as an example of some fun stuff. I think you can release what you want, when you want. What feels reinvigorating to you. Maybe, for you, Tegan it’s Lo-fi and for Sara it’s EDM. Maybe you need a writing retreat lol (I hear those are expensive though).

i’ve loved the demos that have come out of this substack these past couple of years. we’re being let in to a very intimate step along the song & album development process. i’ve always felt like despite how wonderfully recording, mixing, and mastering can transform a song into an accessible piece for most, demos are the raw art coming from artists. they say art is up for interpretation and even a beautifully mixed piece has been a collaborative interpretation of what something once was. it’s interesting how the life of a song fluctuates between demos and released versions, and its captivating that the feelings of vulnerability arise when artists offer their demo pieces to fans. even though there might be feelings of criticism from within, or even outwardly, there’s always going to be someone out there who can see the beauty in these, and recognize the growth that’s been made.

I feel like taking a deep breath after reading this post, but I love the demo and I'm glad you felt happy listening to it and that you had fun during its creation, maybe it will inspire you? I don't know anything about selling music and I can only imagine the pressure but I hope you find a balance between that and the joy of writing songs, I know how much you love creating. Numbers are important but ultimately you have an audience that will support your art, weird or lo-fi, if you are excited about it, we are too! - I saw you and Sara last week in Solvang and we quickly took a picture together after the show, I was too shy to introduce myself or say anything really, but wanted to say thank you :) Also, I'll organize your music, demos or whatever you want for you! Haha x

Do you find success stifling? I imagine what it must be like for celebrities and that relentless ‘spotlight’ would feel like a prison.

I just ‘discovered’ this song 8 days ago. I think it’s wonderful. It’s the voice, you see.

As far as I’m concerned, I’d show up to a nursery rhyme concert if you sang it so, give yourself a little grace. ❤️

All the love! 😊

one little detail I liked about the album cover is that it's in the background of the back in ur head video (which is one of my favorite songs, ever)

I forgot how much I love this song! This, give chase and light up are some of your best work that never officially made an album! I love you using Substack to share rare tracks, covers and acoustic versions.

"Music has become something we think of as “free.”

I think it's time for an exciting brand new episode of "Sharing the (business) plan with our fans" by Rain Quin, isn't it?

What are we moving towards in the future?

I’m here for all the scrappy demos and weird, chaotic songs you want to share with us. And the reimagining of your older songs. And random tiktoks. And new music and books! Just do what you want, so many possibilities at this point. I relate to doing SO MANY THINGS, too many things maybe. Still working on finding the balance; I seem to either go a million miles an hour or become a recluse and create nothing 🤪

Hey Tegan (and Sara),

Thanks for sharing. It’s funny how I’m so used to the way you both write on here (I’ve been subscribed since the start) that I knew it was you before you told us.

Personally I think an EP of unreleased demos or re makes of old T&S songs would be fantastic! I’d love to hear a mash up of different Tegan and Sara eras in one epic ep or album! No pressure or anything, it’s just a very exciting thought! Especially seeing as the two of you don’t seem to have as many EPs as most artists with your amount of albums usually do (in my experience).

Please still keep releasing new music! Please!? I think I’d figuratively die without another T&S album somewhere in the horizon. In terms of the TikTok part, everyone DOES seem to be on it (not me), I’m personally hoping it’s a phase and it’ll become slightly less relevant when another new ‘amazing’ platform pops up. As I will never be joining TikTok even though for my writing career I will have social media.

In terms of the I’ll take the blame two/three songs. I hadn’t heard them in a while before this post. I love that they’re the con but not at the same time.

The album the con will always have a special place in my heart!

In terms of your ‘ps’ part, I’m proud to be a paying subscriber! I’d be a founding member, if for nothing else I just love how it sounds, but my allowance goes into being a paid subscriber. (My parents are happy to support your music anyway, but this way I’m happy but sadly no pocket money.) meeting the two of you (even though it was only on zoom) is worth all my money forever! Hope we’ll do another substack zoom soon?

Thanks again for sharing!
