Thanks for posting! And thank you for reading too! Much appreciated!
I’ll read crush. My birthday is next week on the 19th hopefully it’s amongst my presents and if not I’ll buy it.
I was sad to hear about high school because the series was just getting to the most dramatic part! And also of course because it was really awesome too!
I also just wanted to say I love that you both don’t shy away from mental health related stuff. You don’t specifically talk about it a lot but you don’t shy away when asked. As someone who has in the past and still really does struggle with mental health issues, I know how difficult that can be to be more open about it. Because Grover (my dog) doubles as my assistance dog, when we’re out in public people feel it’s ok to ask what exactly he does for me, even once I’ve said he helps with mental health issues they want to know more. So I truly admire that you both are open. (It reminded me of this because of the question about failure.) I also feel that I understand in some ways what it’s like to be a celebrity a bit better than most people, because, as anyone with an assistance dog or wheelchair etc will know, people stare a lot. I get paranoid that they’re staring at me and have to remind myself that they are staring at Grover. I also get the ‘people feeling entitled to know information about you’ thing too (as I explained).
I love these question-answer format substacks! They’re really cool. It feels very authentic.
Thanks for sharing Sara!
Phoenix, he/they/it, 17, Australia (probably the last time it’ll say 17)
I vividly remember when I first saw you and Tegan open up for another artist in 2002. I was immediately a fan, and saw you perform a couple more times over the next few years. And then I drifted away; I continued to listen casually and would be delighted when your names would come up in conversations, but I wasn’t going to shows, life was busy, and I had zero extra money. Fast forward to reading your memoir, reconnecting with the music which was so formative, then introducing your music to my kid, who adores you both. What a joy to revisit all the music, support your projects, and connect with the T&S world again all these years later.
Idk if Substack automatically adds some of the graphics into the posts or you guys do, but I just hafta say I love the tin cans on a string at the bottom. I actually have a memorial tattoo for my childhood best friend who passed that has a yellow bird carrying tin cans on a string (over a piano) -- all references in the Bright Eyes song Poison Oak. Seeing it here made me smile. You've all been with me for 20 years, so it felt full circle ;)
I love that someone asked you about a musical, and while I swear it's not me (at least I don't recall submitting questions to events I didn't attend 😂) I will once again say that I support this cause, for an original musical using your songs, and I even gave Tegan an envelope with a pitch! The campaign continues :D
My friend got me Jen's book 'The Prince and The Dressmaker' for my birthday' I loved it and we're discussing it next year at the queer book club my friend runs! I'll definitely need to check out her other books!
