We are currently preparing for the JUNOs, Canada’s equivalent of the Grammys. I’ve attended twice in my life, this will be the third time. The first time, I went alone. Sara and I were nominated for “The Con” but Sara didn’t feel like going. She and Emy had broken up, and we were at each other’s throats, overextended, and exhausted from relentless touring and promotion around the world. So I went alone. It wasn’t great. She didn’t miss much. I got a horrible cold and lost my voice in the days before and had to sing at an event without her. Anyway. Not fun.
The second time I went to the JUNOS was when “Heartthrob” was nominated four times in 2014, and we were offered a slot to perform “Closer” on the televised portion of the show. A lot of people don’t even know that awards shows like the Grammys and JUNOS give away upwards of 85 awards before the televised portion. We won three awards that year, but two of them were given away at the dinner. It was just as scary taking the stage at the dinner to accept an award as it was the next night on live TV. Truthfully, I barely remember it.
We’ve recently relaunched ‘Where Does The Good Grow’ only on Substack exclusively for paid subscribers! Have you watched?
Sunday, Sara and I will be taking the stage at the JUNOS to accept a Humanitarian award for our commitment to bettering the lives of LGBTQ people through our work in music and the Tegan and Sara Foundation. It’s an honour and we’re excited, but I must admit I feel a bit anxious about it all. I have the usual insecurities about what we will wear (dressing up is so hard for me), if anyone will know who we are (it’s true!), and what it will feel like to talk on National television (gulp). But mostly I know it will be fun and it will go well. Still, keep your fingers crossed that we don’t trip, or drop an F-bomb on live TV.
In the meantime, here are some of my favourite red carpet appearances over the years.
You two have always looked stunning at events, whether they are 'red carpet' or not. And the Heartthrob Era was strong, all those shirts/blazers, leather jackets & Doc Martens? 🔥
You've both worked so long & fought so hard for the LGBTQ community, and it's just one of the many reasons your fans are always so proud to wear your merch out in the world, & support you in all you do, because you are always selflessly giving back. I hope you have an amazing night on Sunday, you both deserve it. You've never once looked nervous or anxious, so I know you'll both smash it ❤️❤️ So incredibly proud of you. Go get it 😎 x
If you don’t know what to wear and are afraid that people don’t know you, just wear some merch with your face and the band name on it. You are welcome
