One thing I noticed while watching you both answer questions live and perform is you rarely look directly at folks in the audience. You either look over them, at each other, or you close your eyes. The question popped up too late in my head to ask for the Q&A, but does it feel scary to make direct eye contact/interact directly with some of your fans in the audience? How do you feel about fans approaching you in public?
SF show was the one nice thing I was able to give myself in the midst of a really hard year, finishing grad school. I’m so glad I was able to because it was one of the best experiences ever! Thank you guys for publishing some VIP questions, I’m eating them all up!
As a 30 year self-taught musician (vox, guitar, drums and bass), I am interested in your recording set ups. I know you and Sara use Logic Pro X and an AU Apollo Twin (!!) interface to swap during song development. Can you do a video tour of your recording setup? Pics? I know I’m totally nerding out here as an audiphile, but would love to peel back the curtain on your recording rig. Do you have any favorite plug-ins? What’s your mic of choice? I like a Shure 87A and a Rode NT1-A.
Georgia joined a pack? My word she’s really growing up. I’m so happy for all of you to enjoy her daily activities. Dogs, like cats, were bred for work, so they need constant attention and stimulation, so Georgia joining the pack is pretty dope!
I’m so glad that my daily voice warm ups on my drive to work are your songs! It’s Tegan and Sara Crybaby all the way there, and Still Jealous on the way back. Thank you for accompanying me on my ride to work. I’m so glad you can’t hear me signing though! 😂
I was so excited to wake up to your reply and then Doubly excited to see a post from you! Cool post!
You mentioned Georgia and how great is it that she gets tired out! I get that! I’ve had my dog Grover for a few days now and we’re getting into the routine of things, but tiring him out by taking him for a long walk in the morning tires me out a lot! (He’s 14 months old and he’s mostly a lab (one of his parents was half labour half golden retriever.)) how old’s Georgia now?
As for questions, the ones I’ve thought of I’m saving, but I do wonder, because you and Sara have a lot of tattoos weather either of you have one you want to share the meaning of, I have several now and I know some can have really personal meanings so I get it but I thought you might have one or two you haven’t talked to us fans about before? I also wondered how many tats each of you had.
Can you guess my two latest obsessions (besides T&S), dogs and tattoos!
Anyway Grover’s settling in well all things considered and he’s an ex seeing eye dog so he’s very well behaved! (He didn’t meet the requirements around getting excited around other dogs).
I don’t have time right now to have a look at the YouTube videos or the playlists, I’ll have to check them out later! Having said that, I fixed my schedule and it’s not 12am yet (Grover gets up at 8am latest).
Thanks for posting! Your absence was noticed but I’m glad you had a good holiday! (We also got two great posts from Sara).
What is this dog pack?!? Wow, that sounds so cool! My pup needs a pack!
And the back half of Crybaby is amazing! The whole album is great, but I really feel like the end is a treat. It's actually inspired me to set a goal to listen to more full albums this year and seek out those deep cuts and "more adventurous" tracks, and so far it's been a really fun exploration. I don't know when I stopped listening to albums as a regular practice, but when I think about it it's kind of like skipping around and only reading a few of the chapters in a new book you bought, maybe out of order, before settling on your favorite chapters and only ever rereading those... 🤔
i feel proud of georgia being good enough around other dogs to join a pack like she's my dog lol. i got my tiny dog when she was about 8 already so my training focus was bladder control and a little less barking but at about 14 she's improved a lot! she does have napoleon syndrome tho so i don't let her off leash around other dogs.
i will admit i'm VERY ready for a tour announcement, having not gone last year. i finally got the crybaby CD (yes i collect CDs in 2023) to play in my car and it truly gets better and better!
Aww I used to love doing those random surprise projects when my husband used to travel more. I love that Sofia does that for you! If she's anything like me she probably gets a huge kick out of your reaction, that was always my favorite part
I haven't taken a voice class in like 11 years and my range definitely suffered.
I hate lip rolls, doesn't it make your nose tingle?
This might be a silly question, but how does... a dog join a pack?
As for what you describe as thinking of the "what if" vs. "what is", that sounds so familiar to my personal journey with OCD (oh, Lexapro, I love you so much, thank you for getting me back to myself.) Do you think that for you this is where it comes from?
And, since we're allowed to add questions, here's one that I thought of quite a bit listening to Crybaby:
Is the lyric "This bruise ain't black it's yellow" a callback to White Knuckles' "This bruise is blue and black?" Coz if so - what an awesome journey of healing over albums :D
We have those same bloody straws. Except Nicky uses them to blow bubbles into his milk.
The stuff about warming up your voice was awesome, though. That fed my 'behind the scenes' cravings. I love it! Also, you have a great legacy. I'm looking forward to more Tegan and Sara this spring!
P.S. Crybaby is a master stroke and I am getting deeper into the album, just as you mentioned (even though it was most listened to album last year, according to Apple Music) and I am hearing all these nuances I missed the first 2,032 times I listened to it. I woke up this morning singing the opening verse of 'Under My Control', funny enough. 'Sometimes I See Stars' came on just as I parked at work but I repeated the song maybe four times before leaving my car. It really got to me today.
P.P.S. I'm deep diving on some of your earlier work since I am a newer fan, relatively speaking, and I have 25 years to catch up on. 'All You Got' and 'I Hear Noises' are top shelf! Truly top shelf songs!
I absolutely love listening to those playlists you guys make, I found some songs I really liked on Sara's "don't be old" playlist. I was looking through the high school one and it's going to be interesting to listen to and it's making me think of bands I listen to now and how they influence me (tegan and Sara, Paramore , the regrettes etc). Sometimes I forget you probably don't listen to your own music all the time when you're just at home listening to music. This sounds really weird but if I were tegan and Sara I would listen to my own music all the time. I'm still really really loving crybaby, I listened to it twice yesterday, I really can't decide what my favorite t & s album is anymore. I think it's exciting y'all are touring again later this year. Maybe, hopefully I'll be able to go to another t&s concert at some point.
Tegan, Great questions, great answers, I love them all on Substance. Thanks for letting us in on the voice warm ups. I remember on tour you told everyone to tighten our butts and sing. Do you do this? Good advice from a rock star. Thanks for posting you and Sara's High School playlists. I have been looking for the right ones. Later, be safe and healthy!!!! Love you guys!!!
Some of the music you listened to in high school reminds me of your music now - they were definitely influences. Ah yes, I remember the dreaded breathing from the diaphragm warm up’s. Ugh. Warming up is hard work! But it paid off because you both sounded great in concert. On another note, no pun intended, as I listen to your songs, I’m blown away by what gifted songwriters you both are. I’ve always wanted to write a song but have NO idea where to start. So my question is - do you write all of the parts for each instrument? As I listen, all of the music from each instrument fits together perfectly to form the song. How do you do that?
Hi Tegan. I’m currently on a 24 day streak of learning Portuguese on Duolingo (picked it back up on the first of the year as a way to wake up my brain in the morning). Have you picked up any new words in Portuguese lately? Or I think you were learning Italian at one point. How’s that going? Does Georgia know any commands in Portuguese or would that be too confusing for both of you?

I love that you have Frente on your playlist. I don’t know many people that know them. Ordinary Angles is one of my favorite songs.
You suck was and is still my fuck you anthem.
