I loved those shows. Other faves were The Golden Girls, The Facts of Life, Mr. Bean, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Daria, etc.

Part of my routine when going to shows or before falling asleep is listening to your banters or live deep cuts. It has to be ridiculously hilarious or sad. I’m either laughing on a plane, bus, or train or dozed off in my own little headspace and there is something really comforting about that for me.

Where were you guys, when I was a child, to tell me I could use my boombox for recording more than music off FM Radio and the weird songs I’d make up? I didn’t get my own VCR - a gift from my parents - til college so I could record Buffy when it changed to Tuesdays and I had a night class. 😅

Sometimes you have to take it back to the old days.

EDIT: I forgot to wax nostalgic for 90’s TGIF. We watched Full House even though it was more my two sister’s vibe after a while. I did watch a couple of later seasons of Home Improvement - no idea why. Of all “my era” of TGIF, my fav was Step By Step.

I also had all episodes of Buffy taped into VHS tapes, and several friends borrowed them. The first DVD I ever bought was Season 1 of Buffy.

Thanks for sharing these podcast episodes, looking forward to checking them out!

I also love listening to something as I settle in for sleep. There are some guided meditations I rotate through, and at times I’ll listen to podcasts. Though lately, I’m dozing off as my kid and I listen to a Goodnight, World sleep cast in her room. Our favorites feature Bert and Ernie. It’s a nice routine for this age.

I’m pretty certain my brother and I did the same thing with our boom boxes, recording the audio from tv shows LOL And TGIF was a weekly highlight for me. I was also very into Nick at Nite, lots of Dragnet, Mary Tyler Moore and Dick Van Dyke. So much nostalgia 🧡

I also loved to tape TV shows onto cassette tapes. I had a TV channel that was also broadcast on an FM radio station. There was a cartoon I loved, called Star Street, and the original music on the show was amazing, not for kids at all, very current and 80s. So I taped the songs from the episodes on a cassette and I listened to them for years, until the cassette was stolen. I have been monitoring YouTube for years to see if the episodes from the show pop up, and a year ago they did. Actually, the composer from the show uploaded full versions of the songs, so thirty years later, I finally have those beloved songs back. That show and the Disney Sing-Along video tapes totally shaped my love of and obsession with music.

Oh man! I remember listening to 66 CFR Calgary Flames radio when I was a kiddo. My parents always had it on.

This is why when you and Tegan have shared Spotify playlists like "Don't Be Old" and "TRQ Kinda likes Music, "it's so rewarding. As a playlist connoisseur and "DJ" to any room of friends, I think we all feel our taste is best, lol, but when on road trips or in the right environment, listening to someone else's loves is so exciting. We discover so much new stuff, orrr learn what we absolutely do not vibe with.

If you want to be a DJ again, you could make a separate Loners playlist! And maybe even open a second one that we can all add to as a club! Heck if anyone's interested, I'll open one in the interim! <3

So funny... TGIF was brought up somewhere else today, too. Fond memories. And I miss the days of recording onto cassette. I'm actually opening up a store here in Nashville soon called The Video Store and I'm planning on carrying cassette players among other things. We all need the nostalgia.

Hey Sara,

Thanks for posting! And for reading!!

I’ll admit I don’t love listening to podcasts, I find it difficult to sit and listen to things, and as a dyslexic that’s my only way to access books, so if I’m listening to purely audio I prefer a book not a podcast, I do like to watch people record podcasts though.

I can so relate to listening to things as you go to sleep, I used to listen to an album which was just sounds of the beach with calming music because I had trouble going to sleep without noise (and I still do). For years I listened to the same album. But long after my mum discovered and introduced me to audiobooks (she found them before they were common to listen to, so we’d borrow cd’s from the library and listen to them that way). I slowly transitioned to then having the CD player in my room with an audiobook playing me to sleep. Though I only listen to books I know well to go to sleep.

I’m usually very happy to see a new substack post but I was particularly happy this time, because I wanted to talk as I’ve been very in my head. Not sure how much I’m comfortable sharing with the internet, but I’m in the process of getting a diagnosis of something my psychologist told me she thinks I have (I’m not yet comfortable with sharing what I’m getting diagnosed with, but just know if I was just talking to you Sara or you and Tegan I would probably share. But the whole internet doesn’t need to know, not yet). Anyway, I’ve been spiraling about it ever since, because the more I research into it, the more I think I have it. And that changes my perspective on my whole life (in a good way, mostly). So that’s been causing me some problems of it’s own. Just felt like sharing that, hope it was interesting. I will definitely talk about it again, but I’m not sure when that’ll be.

Thanks for posting Sara! And thank you for the solace I’ve been able to find in yours and Tegan’s music, because my life has been particularly challenging the past few years.

I remember having a microphone that could connect to the radio and we pretended that we had a radio show. Then we discovered our father's video camera and we made parodies of tv shows we watched.

What we used to do to listen to music over and over. lol. I opted for a cd player and ditched the tapes only to miss making my own mixes I don’t know what I was thinking. 😊

Thanks for the story Sara and give Sid a big ole hug from us, his fans.

Thanks Sara, I will be sure to listen to these. I always wondered what the word was for what I feel when listening to certain podcasts alone with headphones. And that is it, it's intimate.

Although I never caught a lot of TGIF, it says a lot that I still know of it and know about it now.

I hope you all enjoy, your approaching summer break! ☺️💛

You brought back memories of me tape recording Good Rocking Tonight. I’d pretend to be a DJ. That’s how my mom figured out the babysitter let me stay up late. Lol. That was the perk of being a good kid. My babysitters always let me stay up.
