Tegan,
I've noticed that you often use my name at Starbucks or when placing food orders over the phone. Truthfully, I've never really used your name for anything until a recent trip to New York City. I attended The Gotham Awards solo, representing "Tegan and Sara" without you, not for the first time, but it was the first instance I can remember where I was asked to walk the red carpet entirely alone. Approaching the carpet, I mentioned to our publicist that I felt somewhat insecure as my name ("Sara Quin") was far less recognized than yours. So, when the woman with a whiteboard asked for my name, I spontaneously said, “Tegan Quin.” She flashed your name to the photographers, and with a grin, I stepped onto the carpet. For the next two minutes, I relished the absurdity of committing my first twin fraud.
Once inside the venue, I reunited with Clea and Laura. We huddled together near the bar and behind the tables where we'd eventually watch the award show and have dinner. It's hard not to let your eyes wander when some of the most famous actors in the world are milling about. Compared to the Academy Awards, the atmosphere was far less formal, making the sightings all the more astonishing. A handsome waiter commented on my suit, and it made my night.
"High School" was nominated for the best breakthrough series (under 40 minutes). Generally, I don’t attribute much weight to these types of shows or events, but that night, it felt as significant as many people must perceive it to be. My heart raced when our category appeared on the screen. Although we were convinced we wouldn't win, there's always that fleeting "what if" moment. It’s like a near-death experience—I pictured the three of us on stage, flushed with excitement, stumbling over our words in front of what I imagine would have been an equally stunned audience. We lost to, Beef.
I found myself seated next to Hugo Blick, the creator of "The English" and "The Honorable Woman." I was a bit star-struck, but he was affable and hilarious, and we hit it off. When "A Small Light" won best breakthrough series (over 40 minutes), Hugo and Chaske Spencer, the lead actor on "The English," clinked glasses. During one of the final categories, I couldn’t help myself from taking a photograph when Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig walked on stage. (It’s blurry)
After the show ended, I headed back to the hotel, and I was in bed by 10, which felt glorious after taking a red-eye flight from Vancouver the night before. Unfortunately, jet lag got the better of me, and I ended up watching "Mad Men" until 3 AM.
Sara
Imagine if you had won, you could have said anything up there and everyone (unfamiliar with you) would think it was Tegan 😂 I will echo some of the comments and ask about season 2, any news?
That server was right, you look dashing in that sharp looking suit. 😊
How sparkly it all sounds to be at an awards show. If season two comes out, will you have another shot at winning? Or is the breakthrough finished?
Have a lovely Christmas if you don’t make another post. ❤️
