I refuse to watch any news today. Instead filling it with Thai food, -10 degree (brrrrrr 🥶) walks, and Slowdive on my headphones. I’ll throw on your recommendation next!
::edit:: While looking up John Maus, I didn’t know he was from Minnesota! Sooo cool!
Trying to look at life with open arms and open eyes, and not a bitter heart. A humble wordsmith, yes, that’s me who refers to themselves as the humble wordsmith. I need to figure out my own life outside of what’s going on in the world, and one step at a time I have been. Still sober with a new attitude, healthier body, and soon to be healthier mind lol. Let’s take the good with the bad with a grain of salt. Maybe those saltier moments in life will flavor the good ones when they come.
You have eclectic yet good taste in music. I will give it a listen. I hope your future includes more writing. I almost felt like I was running in NYC, too. 😊
Thanks for sharing, Sara. Always love new music recommendations from you. I knew today would feel heavy for obvious reasons. To counteract the dread, I met up with a friend early today. happy to see your post today 🧡
Sorry I’m a day late from my usual reply, wasn’t expecting 2 substacks so close together.
I like that we got a story time and a throwback. I’ll have to give the album a listen, I already love the title. The length kind of reminds me of some of the Hey I’m just like you songs with their extremely long titles.
I felt so sad when I saw the election coming to a close, (even though I’m Australian, I say that because I think lots of people are in denial that this doesn’t just effect Americans), I’ll admit I was so sure that this time he wouldn’t win, not after last time, not to mention he should be in f-ing jail!
Enough of that though. I’m sure no one really wants the reminder, I just felt like I should mention that I do care and I am worried, especially for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community particularly for people of colour within our community, and for my trans and nonbinary brothers, sisters and siblings.
We’ll get through this together! Let’s have hope! Stay safe (or as safe as you can be) everyone.
As for albums, not that you asked Sara, but I’m not sure what my most listened to album is (I don’t have Spotify). I think it’d probably be one of yours and Tegan’s, or Noahfinnce’s debut album, or an indie Australian folk bands called ‘The Mae’s’ latest album. I was lucky enough to see The Mae’s live and while it was difficult for me to be in a crowd (and difficult for other reasons I won’t get into) with the help of my amazing assistance dog Grover, I was able to see The Mae’s perform again. And this was the first time I went to a real concert since before COVID. I say I saw them again because I saw them in 2019 when I was 12 and that’s when me and my family started liking their music. Highly recommend their music, they also remind me a bit of watching videos of the two of you bantering on stage, they aren’t twins but they are sisters and they’re both queer too!
I can’t wait till you (T&S) come to Australia so I can see you live too! (Going to go to as many shows as I can afford when u come here).
Thank you for setting up the foundation! I was so pleased when I saw you changed the mission statement to be more inclusive!
Sara, you're clearly referring to Levain, and even as a non-tourist I'm shocked you wouldn't take the cookie! (and share it with Stacy because it is, indeed, oversized.)
I mean, my dorms were on 72nd street, and when I kept working there but lived off campus on 79th street, I'd walk by the Beacon (and an often over-friendly night guard) once I finished my shift at midnight. It was 13 years ago, so this resonates very much :D
I lived on riverside & 88 while in college during that time period. I've been thinking of that time and how I miss feeling the heartbeat of the city under my feet all the time. My calf strength was unmatched. This makes me miss it. It was an experience I'll never get again. I remember the beacon concert, I caught it both nights. Beautiful shows! Hearing Not Tonight mixed with I'm on Fire is still one of my favorites.
I need something to ground me. My anxiety has taken me for a long ride. Currently in the freeze state of the fight and fright freeze circle. Will I always wonder what it would be like or will I let it just be. I don’t know. I just want to be grounded. I love this playlist.
something I love most about this sub is the music recs, it makes me feel like I’m connected to something in a time where we need the connection most! 💙
Hola from Spain! I used to discover new music through Pitchfork too, and using Spotify feels like a neverending loop. It is so hard to stick to anything these days.

Needed this today, thank you 🙏 let’s get through this hellscape 🎶 (and if even more shit hits the fan, just gotta pray for the asteroid 🤣🙃)

Thank you for the intro/playlist/recommendation. Sounds like a banger!
Love this record!

I like salty things! But they are good. :)
Lol maybe Sara didn’t want anyone to know where she used to live.
Hehe. I promise you, with the info Sara dropped here, 99.9% of New Yorkers will know exactly what she was referring too :D
YES

did Andy Felts own the Beacon then?
