The book I'm going to recommend is not on that list because it's older, but it is my favorite book of all time. It came out in the 1960's: One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. I am an avid reader, and absolutely nothing ever has captured my mind and heart like this book. And the series is coming to Netflix soon, and I can't wait to watch it, it looks awesome and made with love by the Colombians it represents.
YES! Love In The Time of Cholera is based on the love story of how his parents met. I found Of Love and Other Demons absolutely hilarious and mesmerizing as well.
Bring Up the Bodies and The Friend are next on my list! I’m placing library holds as well. I made a deal with myself that I’m not buying more books until my new bookcases are ready, which will have after our floors are redone 🤪 … Always lots of house projects lol
NICE! I don't know why but it really makes me laugh when I put a book on hold at the library and the app is like 26 weeks. I've never waited for anything that long...but I love that I am trying to learn patience at 43!
Thanks for posting! Please read when you can, but I know you guys are really busy at the moment.
I’m happy re the book tour and book launch (I look forward to reading), but I was annoyed that the prize for the pre-order thing-y is only for American and Canadian folks, especially given that the US and Canada get to have you touring there constantly. Please please when you do this again make sure everyone can apply no matter where they’re from. Cause I’m feeling rather excluded.
That aside, books, well as I told Sara I’ve read exactly 0 of the books on that list, I recognised some of the titles and authors but have never personally read any as I tend to be rather niched in my tastes, in other words when I find an author I tend to read all their books and I usually stay in the LGBT+ circle too.
You didn’t ask for recommendations not on the list but I love both of Jules Machias’ books ‘Both can be true’ & ‘fight + flight’, I also really like the author Jason June and all her books.
Because reading requires more effort for me than the average person, I tend to be pickier about what I read and why, though there were some titles on that list I found intriguing.
By the way, I finally got the diagnosis confirmed (the one I mentioned before) and I’m still processing it all, but I’m glad I finally have it! Thank you for what you wrote back!
I should go to bed now.
Thanks for sharing Tegan! I truly am happy for you both that you’re doing a book tour, I am sad but not surprised that it isn’t international. Please make contests like the preorder one open to international fans too next time!
I made note of your comment regarding international fans and sent it along to management. Unfortunately, we don't always have a say/sway when it comes to these contests run through other companies. But I shall keep an eye on that!!!
For me sharing my favorite movies, shows, books, and music is exposing my deepest self which is scary. I always panic when people ask me what is my favorite because part of me is afraid to shatter who they think I am. I find pieces of myself scattered throughout my favorites and if you really want to know me that’s where you have to look. I am always quoting lyrics, passages or lines to help me understand the world, work through situations, and deal with my difficult feelings. An example is when I get frustrated with people’s word choice “Because a kitchen sink to you Is not a kitchen sink to me, Ok friend?” is what pops into my head.
Definitely The Overstory, a magnificent book in scope and subject matter. (Disclosure: I'm a long-time treehugger.) And I loved Veronica both times I read it.
YAAAASSSSS!!!! as always, I will chose an actual book over e-readers. The battery running out makes me nervous and if the world ever ends and there's no power..... I got my books. hehe TO THE READERS!!! HEAR HEAR!
I struggle with e-readers for sure. My iPad (which I've been using all year to avoid buying books) gets too hot in the sun, so my reading was very interrupted by over heating. Which was annoying. I feel like what I really need is a book swap program. Take al the crap Ill never read again and swap for new books. know of something like that?
As always, technology can't keep up with the human brain. I don't remember the name of the book club I used years ago but it was kind of similar to a pen pal deal. You'd read a book and send it to an address and then they'd send it to another reader and it continued. There was a central address to send it to. Assuming it was meant to be a middle man of sorts so your address was kept confidential. I'm assuming you guys get that craving to read. Not so much wanting to know the ending but just wanting to read. Escaping but not escaping. Don't get me started on the health effects for the brain because you read. Like know +3 languages.
Ooo I haven’t read any of these either, but now I want too! Thank you Tegan ☺️
And thank you as always, for sharing this lovely post with us. Art means so much to me too, like you say, whether it be books, tv, films or music. And even that doesn’t cover it. The way art can make me bull eyes out my eyes out, whether they be happy tears or sad tears. It’s just so personal. It’s wonderful 🥲🥹❤️
Man, I had so many issues with the NYT list that I decided to sort my "books read" list on StoryGraph based on publishing date and choose my own top books of the century. Except I think it needs to be 24 books. Because if we do top 100 for a century, then it's a book per year. Boy is it going to look different from the NYT list.
And you said it, art is so subjective, but it's even beyond that , I think. I'm reading Doppelganger now, based on both your and Sara's rec, and I'm having a hard time reading it, but I'm also reading it from the presepective of an Israeli. And I asked myself the other day - does this book delivers on its premise, and when I finish it, am I somehow changed or impacted.
And those, too, are such vague definitions. And it'll manifest in nonfiction so differently than in fiction, but as I chose my 24 and had to eliminate some favorites, it was exactly that question I was faced with - why this one and not that one? What has it given me? Sometimes, the answer is just - joy. Even if the book is fucking heartbreaking, I'm looking at you, Gideon the Ninth, that series has enriched my life and my world. And it's not just a vague question, it's a individual one. A member of the LGBTQ community who's been struggling can cite The Miseducation of Cameron Post as lifesaving, while other might not, etc.
I think a lot of us strive to be smart and knowledgeable all the time, that the fact that something is just fun can take a backseat, or count as inferior in quality, in the same way that people look at pop music.
I'll save my issues with Doppelganger for another day and another platform, but I AM curious - did it play a part in inspiring you to write Fake Tegan?
Hey, thanks for this post! Very interesting thoughts. Thank you for sharing your process! (ps loved Gideon)
Re Fake Tegan and what inspired me to write the story - that I will expand on soon - but generally speaking, two years ago I listened to the podcast Sweet Bobby and it inspired me to sit down and write the story. I thought i'd make a podcast about it then write about it...ended up making a movie! EEEE.
Did you also read Harrow and Nona or did you stop with Gideon?
Looking forward to hear about Fake Tegan.
And when will we ever get a Tegan and Sara musical?! You have covered every other medium! Asking for a friend. Who may have written a Tegan and Sara musical.
Between the World and Me is a powerful and impactful read. You may need a break at the end to absorb it all. Thank you for sharing this great list! Do you prefer reading Non-Fiction or Fiction, more? Your sapphic novel shares have been great recommendations. Always and forever though, The Price of Salt is brilliant and ahead of its time!
Bring Up the Bodies was SooOOooo good. I liked Wolf Hall but thought it was a bit of a slog at times - but I FLEW through Bring Up the Bodies.
Good to know! I also felt Wolf Hall was a slog at times, but mostly enjoyed it!
This post was so wholesome. Appreciate you. 📚
I am wholesome. :)

ah! Loved One Hundred Years. Incredible book. Love in the time of Cholera was also so fantastic.

Thank u! I appreciate it!
Favorite band, that’s easy, obviously lol. But my favorite books never make these lists, I think I need to start reading “smarter” books 😂. 🖤
Reading is reading! Smarter books" don't mean anything. I always tell people it's the act of reading that's important. As long as you enjoy it!!!
I totally agree with the list thing, there's no way I could pick out a favourite movie or artist.
I've just booked my vacation for November so will defo be taking a few books with me to catch up on.
Rememberings-sinead o"connor
Down the drain-julia fox
Sure I'll join your cult-maria Bamford

I LOVE that you use your public library. 🥰
It's truly the best!
Another for Bring up the Bodies.
I finished The Friend yesterday and I loved it! Sad but beautiful, sweet and thoughtful. Made me want to get home early to see my dog ❤️
Ooo I haven’t read any of these either, but now I want too! Thank you Tegan ☺️
